J-2--10-3t HABITS OF THRIFT SAVINGS BANK SYSTEM IX I'lB-IJC SCHOOLS IS ACCOMPLISH-. IXG MICH GOOD The public school is fulfilling lis highest functions when it Is supplying that which will strengthen and enrich human life, and that which will fix in our youth habits conducive to the highest type of manhood and One of the evils of the age in America is Improvidence. The habit of reckless expenditure of money is begun In childhood when the tempta tlon to spend every penny secured is everywhere present. To offset this injurious tendency and to provide a wiser means for the dig posal af pennies which come into children's hands, many school boards, in conjunction with the banks of the city, have managed a plan whereby the school pupil with a single penny as a capital become a depositor. Such a system of saving can be evolv ed with the school as a center which will not require over ten minutes a week of the teacher's time and which will occasion practically no interruption to school work.

As a result children will not only develop habits of thrift and frugality incident to saving, but will learn the art of wisely expending their deposits, and, before becoming adults, they will have had experience in the practical handling of money and have become familiar with ordinary business principles and bank ing methods. The report of the L. H. commission er of education shows that there were in U12 in this country school savings banks in 1149 schools, containing 830 rooms, and enrolling 430. 49 chll-J dren of whom 1S7.B2J are depositors in these banks with deposits amounting to 13.482, 162.
