TIMES RECORDER, Zanesville, Ohio Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999 5A- Obituaries Access Ruth Roman 75, dies Thursday LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) Ruth Roman, who starred opposite Gary Cooper and Errol Flynn and survived the Andrea Doria wreck at sea, died in her sleep Thursday, She was 75. In 1956, she and her 3-year-old son were returning from Italy aboard the luxury passenger liner Andrea Doria when it was struck by another ship. More than fifty people died and 760 survived after the ship went down.

The Boston-born actress got her start in community plays at age 9. She attended drama school and later moved to Roman appeared in some minor films before her big break in Stanley Kramer's 1949 "Champion," which featured Kirk Douglas as an unscrupulous boxer. Following the film, Warner Bros, offered Roman a contract and she starred in nine films in less than two years opposite Cooper, Flynn and James Stewart. Roman also appeared in "Beyond the Forest" with Bette Davis, "Three Secrets" with Patricia Neal and "Mara Maru" with Flynn. Roman appeared in more than 30 movies, most of them in the and a num-" ber of tele vision, shows in the 1960s and 1970s, Betty Louise ZANESVILLE Betty Louise Burnworth, 77, of Zanesville, died at 9:26 a.m.

Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Genesis Good Samaritan Campus after a brief illness. Born Dec. 30, 1921, in Zanesville, she was retired from the Loan Department at First Federal Savings Loan in 1987 with 35 years of service. She was a member of First Christian Church-Disciples.

Surviving are one daughter, Sherry and John Colling of Zanesville; two granddaughters, Wendy and Steve Ashby and Lori Hickman, all of Zanesville; three stepgrand-children, Jon and Jenny Mid-dleton, Jeff and Missy Colling and Jay Colling, all of Zanesville; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Aaron Ashby; six step- great-grandchildren, Josh, Justin, Jade, Jared and Jenna Middleton and Evan Colling; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl A. and Emma L. Talley Brock; one sister, Barbara Whitlinger; and three brothers, Carl, Tom and Robert Brock. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Hillis Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the funeral home with the Rev.

John Earhart officiating. Burial will be in Zanesville Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Beau Jocque, 45, helped to revive zydeco music Damon RPostel, 77 LANCASTER Damon H. Postel, 77, of Lancaster, died Sunday, Sept.

12, 1999, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He was a retired truck driver for Roadway Trucking Co. and a member of Sixth Avenue United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 11, VFW Post 1380, Lancaster DAV and Olivedale Senior Citizens. He was a World War II Army veteran. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lelia E.

Postel; one daughter, Shelia (Robert) Taylor of Lancaster; one grandson, Michael (LaVerne) Taylor of Lancaster; one Samantha Taylor; two sisters, Margaret Greer of Uhrichsville and Alice McLaughlin of Cambridge; and three brothers, Ramon (Betty) Postel of Pataskala, Kenneth Postel of Granite City, 111. and Paul (Dovie) Postel of Midland, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sarah (Farrell) Postel; one son, John Postel; and one brother, William D. and John Postel. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

James Don' Croston, 74 MARIETTA James "Don" Croston, 74, of 5339 Valley Lane Columbus, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. Born July 26, 1925, in Vincent, he retired from Elkem Metals and was a World War II Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Ada L. Parsons Croston of Columbus; one son, Randal L. Croston of Amesville; one daughter, Sheri Croston of Columbus; five grandchildren; three brothers, Conrad and Wanda Hill, Nathan and Mildred Mayle and Sam and Lela Butcher. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Myrtle I.

Fields Croston; and five brothers. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Hadley Funeral Home, 500 Fifth Marietta. Services will be 11 a.m.

Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the funeral home with burial in East Lawn Mausoleum. Margaret S.Sturtz, 87 ZANESVILLE Margaret S. Sturtz, 87, of South Zanesville, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Sept.

13, 1999, at Genesis Bethesda Hospital after a short illness. Born March 31, 1912, in Guernsey County, she was an active member of South Zanesville United Methodist Church, a graduate of Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing and a former member of the Salvation Army in Cambridge. She worked for many years as a registered nurse at Bethesda Hospital and served as a nurse in Cambodia for years. Surviving are her husband, Floyd W. Sturtz of the home; one nephew, John Gillespie of Chesterton, several nieces, nephews and friends; and her beloved cat, Tippy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nettie Gillespie; her first husband, Ernest Wymer, who died in 1946; and one sister, Ruth Gillespie. Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at DeLong-Baker Lanning Funeral Home, 56 S. Fifth St. Services will be 11 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at South Zanesville United Methodist Church, 53 E. Main South Zanesville, with Pastor Charles E. Titko officiating. Additional calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -Bertie Welch, 73, of Winter Haven, died Sept. 2, 1999, at Lakelane Regional Medical Center. Born May 16, 1926, in Toledo, she came to Winter Haven from Columbus in 1977. She was formerly from Zanesville and was a member of St.

Joseph Catholic Church. She was a legal secretary for Lou Supina. Surviving are her daughter, Kathie Root of Winter Haven; one brother, Thomas Bray and one sister, Carol Helminik, both of Erie, and her companion, Leight R. Smith of Winter Haven. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom "Trigger" Welch.

Memorial services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society. Crisp Coon Funeral Home, Winter Haven, was in charge of sion of zydeco, he combined rhythm-and-blues, hip-hop1 beats, funk and Texas blues-'1 rock. 11 He was credited with bringing zydeco, a mix of old-time ca-: jun music and rhythm-and-' blues, to contemporary audi-" ences, filling halls in Lafayette, Lawtell, New Orleans and oth-, er cities where he often played with his band, the Zydeco Hi- Rollers.

He also played overseas, and on the David Letterman and Conan O'Brien shows. KINDER, La. (AP) Beau Jocque, an accordion player who helped revitalize Louisiana's zydeco music, died Friday of an apparent heart attack. He was 45. Jocque, whose given name was Andrus Espre, performed Thursday night in New Orleans, then drove 177 miles home to Kinder.

His wife found him collapsed in the shower Friday morning. Jocque worked as a welder before picking up his father's piano-key accordion. In his ver NaomaE.PhiIpot,63 SUMMERFIELD Naoma E. Philpot, 63, of 231 Sequoia Drive, Byesville, formerly of Summerfield, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at her home.

Born Sept. 26, 1935, in Summerfield, she was a retired machinist at March Electric in Cambridge, a Protestant by faith and a member of American Legion Auxiliary in Dexter City, VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Kipling and Moose Lodge in Cambridge. Surviving are one daughter, Peggy Carpenter and her husband, Lloyd of Summerfield; two stepdaughters, Mrs. James (Elaine) Morrison of Caldwell and Mrs. Rodney (Marlene) Leach of Massillon; one sister, Patricia L.

Ruble and her husband, Myrl of Cambridge; four brothers, Harry T. Moore and his wife, Nancy of Cambridge, Charles A. Moore and his wife, Linda, Terry L. Moore and Tim Moore and his wife, Sandra, all of Summer-field; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Moore of Cambridge and Betty Moore of Barnesville; 11 grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry T.

and Luella Barnes Moore; her husband, Perry Philpot, who died Aug. 26, 1979; and two brothers, Tom Moore and Jimmie Moore. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Brubach-Watters Funeral Home, Summerfield.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Eastern Cemetery in Summer-field. Memorial contributions may be made to charity of the donor's choice.

Agnes Woodson Bitzer, 79 CHILLICOTHE Agnes Woodson Bitzer, 79, of Chilli-cothe, formerly of Zanesville, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, after an extended illness. Born April 13, 1920, in Zanesville, she was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chillicothe. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Lynn M. and Wayne B.

Oney of Waverly; one granddaughter, Katelyn Nellie Oney; one sister and brother-in-law, Rhea and the Rev. Ralph Burwell of Zanesville; several nieces and nephews; and grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Nellie McNeish Woodson; and her husband, Francis R. Bitzer, whom she married Oct.

4, 1959, and who died Nov. 3, 1988. Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, 121 W. Second Chillicothe.

Services will be 3 p.m. today at the funeral home with the Rev. Steven J. Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Hospitals Irish actor, novelist John Molloy Molloy appeared in some 60 movies and played Broadway in his own two-man show, "Double Dublin," in 1963-64. He wrote 39 f-revues, two musicals, many TV and radio plays and a best-sell-. ing novel, "Alive, Alive-O." He is best known in the San Francisco Bay area for his one- man show, "Molloy," a hit of the San Francisco International Theatre Festival in 1981, but worked through the 1980s with a series of local solo shows. OAKLAND, Calif.

(AP) -John Molloy, an Irish actor and novelist, died Sept. 2 after a long illness. He was 70. Born in Dublin, Molloy ran away from home at age 14 to join a troupe of actors that roamed the country performing in small towns, and later worked with Marcel Marceau in Paris and with the Gate and Abbey theaters in Dublin. At the Abbey, he specialized in the works of Samuel Beckett.

Alfredo Gil, member of Los Panchos ro and Hernando Aviles of Puerto Rico to form Los Panchos, in which Gil played the "requinto," a small guitar. The trio was known for its soft harmonics, particularly in the romantic bolero. MEXICO CITY (AP) Alfredo "El Guero" Gil, the last surviving member of the original romantic trio Los Panchos, died Friday. He was 84. He had been suffering from pulmonary emphysema.

Gil was born in the central state of Puebla and became a professional musician at age 15.
