It is a world that tries us to the breaking point of human durability. It is a world of fear and uncertainty, anxiety and frustration, suffering and pain.

The times we live in truly are the "times that try men souls." Nonetheless, LIFE IS FOR LIVING. Despite the difficulties, the anxieties, and the suffering, man was created to LIVE both physically and spiritually. The scriptures state: (Genesis 2:7) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul. (John 10:10) I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Not only is life FOR living, but life is WORTH LIVING.

It is worth living because God created man in his own image. We are the crowning point of creation. What an honor' life is. (Genesis 1:27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them. It is worth living because each day of life is provided for us by the Lord the giver of every good and perfect gift.

The Psalmist wrote: (Psalm 118:24) This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Life is worth living because God promises man that he can be successful, happy, and live a meaningful life despite the obstacles if he allows God to direct his steps. The Bible says: (Proverbs 3: 5-6) Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. I 1 PINE-NORVAL BLUE-LINDEN Fourth Main con SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Rev.

Jim Jones wooed politicians with his ability to deliver the black vote, and used a mixture of cash prizes and flattering charm to try to win over the press. He exuded charisma and espoused liberalism. Politicians were often pictured with him. He could deliver hundreds of campaign workers to candidates he endorsed. He appeared with Rosalynn Carter during the 1976 presidential campaign.

For five years, Jones maintained the image of a community-involved evangelist, who cared not only for his racially mixed flock at the Peoples Temple, but also for human rights and a free press. He held public office on the Housing Authority in San Francisco. In 1973, the temple awarded prizes of $4,400 to 12 newspapers and magazines for general excellence in journalism. Three years later, 1,000 cultists demonstrated against the jailing of four Fresno Bee reporters who refused to reveal news sources. But there were some reporters and at least one politician who thought there was more to Jones than the smooth public image.

Jones could easily turn on those he felt were trying to tarnish that image. And he eventually fled his critics. When articles published on his activities in Mendocino County in 1972 dwelt on Jones' claims to raise the dead, 150 cultists picketed the offices of the San Francisco Examiner. After New West magazine published reports of brutality and forced donations in August 1977, the San Francisco district attorney's office launched an investigation, and Jones soon left for Guyana, taking a good share of his flock along. U.S.

Rep. Leo Ryan began an investigation, prompted by complaints from relatives of temple members. Ryan led a delegation, which included a number of newsmen, to Guyana to tour Jonestown. Then last Saturday Ryan, three newsmen and a temple defector were killed at an airstrip near the jungle colony. Hours later, Jones died as he led nearly 800 followers in a mass murder-suicide in which most died after drinking ar.av rs.ira.
